The Government has given the green-light for industrial hemp trials to begin.
Customs Minister Phillida Bunkle has given officials the go-ahead to start negotiating with industry representatives.
Ms. Bunkle says the trials can be conducted under existing legislation but Government approval would be required to grow the product commercially.
She says if the trials are successful she envisages industrial hemp being removed from the misuse of drugs act.
New Zealand currently imports more than a million dollars in hemp products.
