Midway, Kentucky — Midway College will host a one-day conference on the economic potential of industrial hemp, the college said.

Former Kentucky Gov. Louie Nunn and Hawaii state Rep. Cynthia Thielen are among the featured speakers. Thielen was instrumental in 1999 legislation authorizing industrial hemp research trials in Hawaii.

Kentucky was the nation’s leading hemp producer before 1950. Currently, it is illegal to grow hemp here.

The conference will be held at the McManis Student Center on Friday. Registration is $15, $10 for students. Exhibition space is $25.
