Winter is brutal on your skin. The air is dry. Bitter winds rob your skin and hair of moisture. Your face and lips chap and crack. Your hair becomes frizzy and brittle. It’s tempting to just hide indoors under a hat until spring, but you can’t avoid going out in the elements, and you don’t want to miss out on social and work events.

Winter doesn’t have to be cause for dismay and stress about your appearance and your skin and hair’s health. With just a bit of effort and a few simple purchases, you can have beautiful skin and hair all winter long. Follow these 5 tips to fight back against winter’s damaging effects on your hair and skin.

Moisturize Daily

While staying hydrated helps keep your skin moist, you still have to do a bit more to protect it from the elements. Wind and dry air will suck moisture from your face, hands, arms, and legs. To keep your skin looking youthful and beautiful through the winter, you’ll need to take measures to protect and nourish it.

Hempz Triple Moisture Herbal Whipped Creme

Hempz Lotion is made of Shea Butter and Hemp Oil which work to both add and retain moisture to your skin. You should moisturize 1-2 times a day, especially after bathing. Hempz moisturizer has been formulated to contain natural, pure ingredients which are paraben free as well as gluten free. You’ll benefit greatly from its ingredients which are rich in vitamins A, C, and E, antioxidants that will fight toxins and free radicals in the air. Vitamin C, in particular, helps promote collagen production in your skin, which will help cellular regeneration for an anti-aging effect.

Restore Frizzy Hair

Washing your hair every day may be all right during the summer, but in winter, when the air is so dry, you’re just stripping your hair of moisture. If your roots tend to get oily, you may feel like you need to wash it every day. However, if you look at the length and tips, you’ll see a lot of frizz and split ends. You can avoid this by applying Hempz Couture Intense Moisture Mask to revitalize, restore, and nourish your hair ends to alleviate slit ends. For a more intense treatment, use Hempz Oil Treatment to seals split ends and control frizz. You may also want to try Hempz Dry Shampoo and Conditioner absorbs excess oil and allows you to avoid using water altogether.

Hempz Sugar Scrubs

Exfoliate Weekly

Exfoliating your skin with Hempz Sugar Body Scrub will remove dead skin cells, allowing younger, healthy skin to shine through. Dead skin cells clinging to the surface of your face give your skin an aged, dull look. Exfoliating gives your skin a younger look almost immediately.

Use a Humidifier

Not only is the cold of winter bad for skin and hair, but the dryness can be just as damaging. Here in Peoria, IL my 105 year old house uses a boiler heat. Unlike forced heating systems, my boiler does not add humidity to the air. I purchased a hygrometer (usually sold next to humidifiers in your local store) and placed it in my bedroom. I was surprised to find that the humidity level can reach as low as 15%. That’s dryer than the Mojave Desert! This is terrible for skin and hair. To remedy this, I run a humidifier to increase the humidity to the “Comfort Zone” which my hygrometer states is in the 45-55% humidity range. Running a humidifier in addition to applying Hempz Lotion 1-2 times a day makes my skin retain its normal moisture level. Otherwise, my hands especially will crack and bleed, while the rest of my body will be dry and flaky.

Drink Plenty of Water

When it’s hot out during the summer, it’s easy to remember to drink plenty of water. After all, you’re sweating, and you get thirsty. During the winter, it can be harder to remember to stay hydrated, as you’re not out working up a sweat as often. Though you’re not visibly sweating, you’re still losing moisture through your skin into the air — especially since the air is significantly drier during winter months.

When you’re dehydrated, your body pulls moisture away from your skin to help itself function. When this happens, your skin becomes visibly dull and slack. If you make sure that you drink at least eight glasses of water per day, you’ll be on your way to plump, supple skin.

If you follow these tips, you’ll enjoy supple, smooth skin and full, flowing locks all year long.
