  1. Hemp silage trials show high protein, energy levels
    Hemp proved to be high in protein at 19 percent, high in energy and had good dry matter production. Acid detergent fibre was much higher than barley-oat silage at nearly 41 percent compared to 28.2 percent. ADF is the indigestible part of the plant. Calcium and phosphorus were also higher in hemp. Further trials and research data are required to gain a licence to grow hemp for feed.

    Canterbury could produce top-quality hemp-seed oils for export, says a South Canterbury grower wanting to trial industrial hemp. The possibility that industrial hemp may soon be growing in paddocks around New Zealand moved a step closer last week when Customs Minister Phillida Bunkle agreed in principle to trials. Customs officials will meet industry representatives on August 21 to work out a trial framework.

    Illinois joined the fray on March 23, 1999 with the adoption, by the vote of 48 to 6, of a Senate Resolution calling for the creation of an Industrial Hemp Investigative and Advisory Task Force to look into the issue of industrial hemp and return a report and recommendations to the Legislature by January 1, 2000.

  10. Jurors Clear Actor in Pot Case
    A Lee County jury acquitted actor Woody Harrelson on a misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession yesterday, ending his four-year court battle to get the state to differentiate between hemp and marijuana.
