    Foxton could be the best region locally for cropping hemp. The former flax town has the right soil and best climate for growing industrial hemp, which needs a dry, friable soil and plenty of sunshine.

  4. Green light for hemp crop trials
    Hemp crops could be planted by October, with the Government set to approve trials allowing industrial hemp to be grown in New Zealand. Customs Minister Phillida Bunkle said that the main objections from police had been overcome and “approval in principle” for trials had been granted.

    Now that the jokes about getting high on hemp are trailing off, Greg Herriott is happier. It means people have a better grasp of the differences between hemp and marijuana. Industrial hemp, like marijuana, is a member of the cannabis sativa family, but has negligible traces of the hallucinatory chemical THC. Herriott is in the hemp business, one of a growing number of entrepreneurs developing a new industry now that hemp can be grown legally in Canada.

    A high-tech business processing hemp for the manufacturing industry could help transform the prospects for cash-strapped farmers in Wales. Welsh Assembly Agriculture Secretary Christine Gwyther will open the Bio-fibre factory near Caernarfon, which will create 15 jobs.

    According to the latest research, there are about 45 nutrients that humans can’t live without, and which their bodies can’t manufacture: 21 minerals, 13 vitamins, eight amino acids and two essential fatty acids. No single food has them all. But when a food is discovered that is a rich source of several essential nutrients, such as hemp seed, it makes nutrition news.

  10. Hemp friendly
    Former flax centres such as Foxton in the Manawatu could be the best areas for cropping hemp, advocates of the fibre crop, including Greens co-leader Rod Donald, say. Last week, the Government signalled that licences for growing hemp could be issued soon for crops to be planted in the spring.
