    Arran Stephens, Founder and President of Nature’s Path Foods, a leading manufacturer of organic breakfast cereals, said consumers have a right to know what they are eating. According to a poll of 1,001 adults by the Pew Charitable Trusts, three-quarters of the respondents wanted to know what foods contain genetically engineered foods. Of this group, roughly 60 percent said they didn’t want genetically engineered crops introduced into the food supply.

  6. Revised hemp bill would grant U of I production study
    The Illinois House decided Friday to authorize the University of Illinois to study the production of industrial hemp, a relative of marijuana that eventually could become an alternative cash crop for the state’s farmers.

    After two failed attempts to let SIUC study the industrial use of hemp, the “Industrial Hemp Act” is back in the Legislature - but this time, the University was erased from the bill.

  8. Salient facts: biodegradable cars
    Last month, the United States rejected the Kyoto Protocol, which seeks to limit global warming by reducing carbon dioxide emissions, because, according to President Bush, it would hurt American industry. But American car makers, copying the methods of their European counterparts, have begun to replace fiberglass with natural plant fibers anyway.

  9. Study Passes: Illinois House okays bill to allow study at U of I
    The Illinois House Friday passed a bill authorizing the study of industrial hemp. Gov. George Ryan vetoed a similar bill last year at the urging of law enforcement authorities. The current bill contains language addressing their concerns.
