Hallelujah, hemp is here. The promoters of industrial hemp will be rejoicing that the Government is finally allowing trial crops, says the Nelson Mail in an editorial. The approval has been a long time coming. Those who have lobbied for it, including a Motueka group, have had to convince the authorities that it is not a wacky idea and not another way to grow wacky-baccy.

Illinois Governor Vetos Hemp Study Bill
Last week, Illinois Gov. George Ryan, vetoed a bill that would have authorized a study of the feasibility and desirability of industrial hemp production in Illinois. Despite acknowledging good faith effort by legislators and the fact that the bill had nothing to do with marijuana, Ryans veto message made it clear that he was bowing to pressure from anti-drug groups.

Industrial hemp makes sense for us
The Oglala Lakota people are oriented toward large extended families, called tiospayes. The American Horse tiospaye is one of several which support hemp agriculture and manufacture as a central land-use plan that can bring prosperity to our traditional reservation homesteads. The White Plume tiospaye and others are also engaged. We see that hemp, an ancient crop with a long trail of useful credentials, could be a wonder crop.
