Silicon, or just a silly con from a silly Carr?
No way, said Premier Bob Carr on March 15, 2000. The ironbark eucalypts in the Pillago and Goonoo forests in the Blue Mountains were not to be used to produce charcoal for converting silica (sand) to silicon (for photocells, etc). Instead, innovative, fluidised-bed technology devised by CSIRO would use fast-growing plants such as kenaf and industrial hemp, along with crop and timber wastes, to produce charcoal for the proposed smelter at Lithgow. So I reported in my column [CT, April 27, 2000]

Silk and Hemp Quotas Abolished
While Europe and the US have abolished the silk and hemp finished clothes quotas on the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong SAR, Hong Kong businessmen surely have sharper competitiveness than their Southeast Asias counterparts. Supporters of industrial hemp continue quest for acceptance
When a bill to study industrial hemp was rejected recently in the Illinois Legislature, its supporters were left with a conundrum: How do you study a potential crop if you cant legally grow it? That was the first time hemp seed had been legally planted, she said. Some might write off talk of hemps virtues as a little too Woody Harrelson for their tastes. But when a House Republican stakes so much of her credibility on the issue, its bound to get the attention even of skeptics.

The power of hempseed oil
An article in the Daily Telegraph on Wednesday 5th December 2001 reported that hempseed oil has therapeutic power to treat conditions such as eczema and pre-menstrual tension (PMT). These claims do not follow from the research which is a small RCT in 14 healthy volunteers, none of whom showed any clinical improvements, but who all showed increased blood gammalinoleic acid (GLA) levels.

White House Watch: A new age of reefer madness
Unless you are an avid reader of the Federal Register and perused the tiny print of almost undecipherable bureaucratese on pages 51,539 through 51,544, you might have missed it but the government has returned to normal. The Drug Enforcement Administration, under the direction of Asa Hutchinson, the former GOP congressman from Arkansas, has announced rules to ban certain brands of a wide variety of foods beer, cheese, coffee, corn chips, energy drink, flour, ice cream, snack bars, salad oil, soda and veggie burgers if they contain trace amounts of THC.
