As we were marveling at the sight of hempseed oil burning, Rep. David Babson (who would be chairing the hearing today) came in. Rep. Derek showed him the candle and he immediately picked it up, brought it out into the committee room and set it on the witness stand where it would sit burning for the duration of testimony.

    Hemp grew out of the Agriculture Committee Thursday afternoon by a unanimous 7-0 vote. Under the bill, industrial hemp — argued as a nonhallucinogenic cousin of the drug cannabis sativa — would be grown by licensed farmers under supervision of the federal Drug Enforcement Agency and the state Department of Agriculture.

    The latest attempt to pave the way for legal growing of industrial hemp in Kentucky got under way yesterday, with more official encouragement than ever.

    Gov. George Ryan on Friday rejected legislation that would have allowed two state universities to study industrial hemp, a biological relative of marijuana that some people eyed as a potential cash crop for struggling Illinois farmers.

  10. Hemp crop at threshold
    Hemp will be cultivated in Southwestern Ontario fields again this summer despite growing pains in developing markets for the formerly illegal crop. Hempline Inc., based in Delaware, will be contracting farmers to grow the crop again this year, the company’s president, Geoff Kime, said yesterday.
