2. Ag scores big as Illinois general assembly session closes
   This bill authorizes the University of Illinois to study the feasibility and desirability of industrial hemp production in Illinois. The bill also removes research hemp from prohibitions under the Cannabis Control Act. A similar bill failed to pass the Governor¼s desk last year, but this year¼s bill is modified slightly. The bill also requires that Western Illinois University study the impact on law enforcement. It has passed and awaits the Governor¼s signature.
   
   
3. Canada Cup mountain bike competition to taste HEMPOLA™ high power pancakes
   The Canada Cup Mountain Bike competition, June 9 and 10, 2001 at Hardwood Hills promises to be an action packed event. As a special treat for competitors and spectators, delicious pancakes made from protein rich HEMPOLA hempseed flour will be dished out as part of HEMPOLA’s on-going drive to raise funds for Team Hardwood, a non-profit cycling club directly linked to the National Development Centre.
   
   
4. Cool Hemp, hot seller
   About 4 1/2 years ago, Ms. Anderman started experimenting with hemp milk and a hand-cranked ice cream maker, and has been producing Cool Hemp on a small scale for about three years.
   
   
5. Earth friendly hemp farm house starts construction
   On a farm where hemp is grown and hempseed is cold pressed into nutritious oil, a new homestead is being built. Sound unique? What’s more unique, is this new farm house is being built with hemp fibre. The ground was broken this morning to commence digging of the foundation.
   
   
6. Ethical shopping
   With a wealth of ethical shopping sites on the web, it is neither time consuming nor difficult to shop and stick to your principles. I am not promising that it will be cheap, but it doesn’t always have to be more expensive either. The web also allows access to those smaller companies whose products are not easily found outside the main cities, or even in them, for that matter.
   
   
7. FCC’s new mandate official
   The Farm Credit Corp. has a new name and a new expanded mandate, thanks to legislative amendments approved by Parliament. Farm Credit Canada now has the mandate to lend money to farm-related businesses, even if farmers do not own them. It also can become involved in venture capital operations and leasing.
   
   
8. Glenwood’s ambassador of hemp
   Glenwood Springs isn’t the center of America’s hemp industry, but thanks to Barbara Filippone, the city is spinning in a pretty tight orbit. Filippone is a partner and director of international trade for the Spokane-based Earthgoods LLC, a leading industrial hemp textile designer and importer. Among her many accomplishments, Filippone has worked over the past two years to create industrial hemp quality standards, which are now recognized across the United States.
   
   
9. Hemp cars could be wave of the future
   Researchers in Australia and England are working on developing materials from plants like hemp and elephant grass to replace plastic and metal-based car components. Scientists say the materials are biodegradable and can increase fuel efficiency since they weigh about 30 percent less than currently used materials.
   
   
10. Hemp for Victory
    The idea that a plant associated with marijuana could save farmers’ livelihoods and the environment too doesn’t register with drug warriors.
