An effort to study industrial hemp as a potential cash crop in Illinois was revived in the General Assembly this week. The House Higher Education Committee approved a measure that would allow the University of Illinois to study the plant, which can be used to make everything from clothing and building materials to lip balm.

First certified organic hemp food company
HempNut, Inc., located here, announced that it has received Third-Party Certified Organic status from Quality Assurance International, of San Diego, California. It is believed to be the first hempseed food company in North America to be third-party certified organic, as well as the first to be issued an Organic Handler Certificate by the State of California.

Geese to dine on hemp on Flinders Island
A new use for the hemp plant is being trialled on Flinders Island in Bass Strait. Growing hemp for its fibre is not new but the first licence to use the plants seed in poultry feed has been issued to a farmer on the island.
