  2. Assembly sends governor hemp study bill
    The state Assembly approved a bill Thursday to direct the University of California to study whether there’s a viable market for hemp and other industrial fibers. The Assembly concurred in Senate amendments with a 43-28 vote, sending the bill to Gov. Gray Davis.

    Industrial hemp-growing company Kenex Ltd., will take on the U.S. State Department tomorrow when it files a lawsuit under the North American Free Trade Agreement. The company, based in Chatham, Ont., is seeking at least $20 million (U.S.) compensation because it says the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s attempt to ban hemp-seed foods is financially devastating.

  5. Church looking for apology from UNMIK police
    The Serbian Orthodox Church in Kosovo has asked for an apology from United Nations police for an incident at a monastery earlier this month in Gracanica, near the Kosovar capital, Pristina. Police held the 70-year-old prioress for several hours of questioning about marijuana they said was growing on monastery grounds. RFE/RL reports that the plants turned out to be wild hemp.

    A street trader who sold “cannabis lollies” to families with young children has vanished. He tried to cash in on the Edinburgh Festival by selling the Amsterdam-made Jolli Lollies to crowds. When confronted, he said they didn’t contain the active ingredient of cannabis, THC, but were made with hemp so they’d taste like joints.

    Research conducted on rats has revealed that linoleic acid, a doubly unsaturated fatty acid found in vegetable seed oils, substantially helps in reducing hypertension and associated loss of cognitive ability, and may also prevent debilitating strokes.
