Farmers find ways to go on forever
When speaking with a group of rural Grade 10 students earlier this winter, Gary Davis posed a difficult question: how do you define sustainability? I really had to work on them to get an answer. But the answer he got wasnt a bad one. From their collective wisdom, the students decided that sustainability refers to something that will go on forever. Last week, Davis was among a group of farmers at a two-day workshop who believe sustainability can work for them on their farms.

Field of dreams closer for hemp industry
Kim Houghs dream to see Western Australia farmers growing open fields of cannabis edged closer this week. The Hemp Resources chief executive officer and Hemp Association of Western Australia president has been lobbying the Government for five years to allow industrial hemp to be grown in Western Australia. And this week the State Government announced it would move to amend legislation to allow safe industrial cannabis to be grown.

First Tassie hemp gear hits shelves
New paper and gift-card products made from Tasmanian hemp were launched on 15 February 2002. Senator Bob Brown launched the Tasmanian Hemp Co-operative products. Hemp Enterprises expects statutory authority approval of hemp food products in the near future. The increased demand for hemp-based products throughout Australia will require additional plantations. Brown said the use of hemp-based products was more environmentally acceptable than using old growth forests to produce exactly the same products.

Food fight
The government is cracking down on hemp foods, which has some involved in the hemp industry fuming, and others grumbling about what they see as a needless change in policy. A new interpretation of federal drug laws went into effect Wednesday, outlawing foods with even trace amounts of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.

Hemp ban leaves health food store owners dazed and confused
The Federal Drug Enforcement Administration this week cracked down on the blossoming hemp industry. The DEA outlaws any product containing THC, the active ingredient in marijuana which has some local health food stores dazed and confused.

Hemp bill passed to Senate Judiciary
The fate of a bill to permit the cultivation of industrial hemp is now in the hands of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The Senate Agriculture Committee quickly got rid of the bill in a brief meeting Thursday by voting to send it to the Judiciary Committee without recommending whether it should be approved.

Hemp food firm is first to comply with DEA rule on THC
HempNut Inc. announced that effective today, it believes it is the only DEA-compliant hempseed food and importing company in the United States. Pursuant to a new Drug Enforcement Administration regulation effective Feb. 7, THC is banned in hempseed products for human consumption. Since 1994 HempNut foods have contained no THC, in anticipation of this move by DEA, the company said today.

Hemp food stays in stores; DEA backs down in face of imminent court action
The Drug Enforcement Administration handed a victory to the multimillion-dollar-a-year hemp food industry last night when they told the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit they will extend the grace period for hemp food products that contain any THC.
