  1. America’s new love affair with Omega-3s
An increasing number of studies and media stories have focused on the benefits of consuming foods rich in Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). These Omega-3 foods, including walnuts, fish, and the seeds of flax and hemp, contribute to healthy brain, heart, skin and hormonal functions. To meet the growing demand for Omega-3 foods, Nutiva, the leading hemp foods brand in the United States, is introducing bulk shelled hempseed in five-pound vacuum-sealed bags.

  2. BSES looks at hemp as a fallow crop for cane growers
A trial planting of three varieties of hemp and one variety of kanaf, has been established in the Mackay area to discover whether a natural fibre crop could be a money earner in cane fallow. The Central Queensland Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations (BSES) has established a one-hectare trial plot of hemp to see whether growers could tap into the emerging natural fibre industry.

  3. Canada: Hemp Industry-In-Progress
Great expectations were raised for hemp. However, many cautioned that it would take many years for the crop to be established. Now five years in, many these expectations have not been met and the cautious have been vindicated. The growth of the hemp sector has been modest and hemp has proven not to be immune to the struggles typical of any new industry.

  4. Cannabis Genetics 101
Brian Taylor and I were talking about the many different varieties of cannabis already to be found with the private growers around the Kootenays. I wasn’t suitably amazed and he asked me to explain why. Variation is easy to generate, I begin. In fact, it’s almost impossible to avoid if you grow from seed. But why? Where do all those different types come from? OK. School’s on.

  7. Crunch on this ‘Bird food’ is the new healthy trend in eating
The way grandmothers tell it, eating like a bird is a bad thing. But health professionals are suggesting that sampling nuts, seeds and small grains is a nutritious way to improve your diet. Flaxseeds, pumpkinseeds, hemp seeds and millet add flavor, protein, fiber and unsaturated fat. Health magazine recently named “bird food” one of its top food trends for 2002, stating that these foods are part seasoning, part nutrient.

  8. Ethical funds campaign out of touch with real issues
“I’m mad as hell that ethical funds would dismiss our products specifically and environmentalists in general to appeal to their aging demographic investor market!” says Jerry Kroll, President Hemptown Clothing Inc.

  9. Fibre future suffers from lack of vision
Alvin Ulrich usually refers to flax when he talks about the potential of Saskatchewan’s fibre industry. But he said the same opportunities that exist for flax fibre exist for hemp.

  10. Food, fiber & fuel: Exploring alternative uses and sources
Fiber, fuel and food are the essentials for existence, and more and more Iowans are relying on outside sources for these basics of life. A forum hosted Saturday by the naturalists for the Kossuth County Conservation Board was focused on raising awareness of ways for reducing that dependence, which in many ways is more environmentally sound.
