Court declares a haven for hemp
On Feb. 6, 2002, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) classified edible hemp as an illegal Schedule I controlled substance a categorization that put the non-intoxicating plant in the same category with heroin. But a recent ruling by the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which covers Montana, has sucked some wind out of that move. If theyd ruled in favor of the DEA, wed be done with our hemp beer, says Tim OLeary, owner of Missoulas Kettlehouse Brewery and proud brewer of Bongwater Ale.

European grant for renewable insulation
The European Commission has agreed to subsidise a German scheme to promote the use of insulation made from renewable materials. Insulation made from sources such as flax and hemp could now be sold at a reduced price, aiming to encourage the consumer to purchase these materials above cheaper insulation materials from traditional fossil sources.

Event aims to plant new notion of hemp
It was a peaceful Saturday afternoon at Alton Baker Park, site of the first ever Emerald Empire Hempfest. All kinds of people stopped by the free event to shop for hemp products, to listen to music about the political plight of cannabis, to sign medical marijuana petitions and to dine on hemp-based food. There were old people, young people, big people, little people, people wearing lots of clothes and people wearing almost nothing at all.
