  2. Is biopharming worth the risk?
    The latest trend in genetic engineering is to grow modified crops that are not intended for food. ‘Pharma’ crops are GE plants that produce proteins or chemicals for pharmaceutical and industrial uses. Since 1991, more than 300 open-air field trials of pharma crops have been conducted in the US, although few details have ever been released to the public.

  4. Major cotton producer reports increased acreage under cotton
    Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the country’s biggest cotton producer, has reported 1.02 million ha under cotton this year, up 11.5 percent over last year. The acreages under oil-bearing crops, hemp and potatoes have also increased.

    UK-based Yorkshire Hemp promoted its range of organic products at the Natural &Organics Products trade show in London in April. The range includes Hemp Nibbles Sweet Vanilla &Cinnamon, bite-sized biscuits, Hemp Muesli Fruit and three varieties of pasta, comprising: Organic Hemp Pasta, Organic Hemp Spaghetti, and Hemp Rasta Pasta, which is both egg-free and organic.

    THC Pharm announced its intention to start clinical trials to get pharmaceutical approval for its dronabinol. In 1998 the small Frankfurt firm started to manufacture dronabinol (THC) from fibre hemp by isomerization of cannabidiol (CBD).

  10. Two year court fight over hemp foods in final stages
    On Tuesday, June 24, the Hemp Industries Association (HIA), which represents the interests of the Hemp Industry and encourages the research and development of new hemp products, filed a brief in the Ninth Circuit asking for a review of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) “Final Rule” regarding hemp foods. If this new “Final Rule” were to take effect, it would ban hemp seed and oil and consequently destroy the multimillion dollar hemp food industry. Due to a Court ordered Stay, hemp foods remain perfectly legal to import, sell and consume while the Court hears arguments from the HIA and DEA and renders a decision.
