Hemp cultivation gets green light in ACT

Australian Broadcasting Corporation

Growing hemp will now be allowed in the ACT (Australian Capital Territory) after the Legislative Assembly passed a bill permitting its commercial cultivation.

Liberal MLA Jacqui Burke says the community must move away from the concept that hemp is about illicit drugs.

Instead, she says it would be an excellent crop to help regenerate fire devastated areas around Canberra.

While supporting the proposal to allow the commercial cultivation of cannabis, Chief Minister Jon Stanhope and Greens spokeswoman Kerrie Tucker have both raised questions about the suitability of the crop given Canberra’s cold climate and limited water resources.

Meanwhile, the assembly is expected to pass a ban on cigarette vending machines to tie in with the total ban on smoking in pubs and clubs which comes into effect in late 2006.
