Monday, July 19, 2004 Permit, Insurance Issues Cancel Annual HempfestFestival May Be RescheduledKOIN EUGENE, Oregon Permit and insurance issues caused organizers to cancel the annual Emerald Empire Hempfest Celebration scheduled for this past weekend. Organizers were denied a parks permit because of concerns over illegal drug use at last years festival. Planners were negotiating with police to improve security when they discovered they couldnt have a beer garden, a significant source of revenue. Organizers then changed their plans and arranged to move to a private campground along the McKenzie River, but county regulations required them to pay $2,800, money they dont have, for a permit. They attempted to get enough money but their insurer told them they werent covered for camping. Banners were put out at the campsite the group had planned to use, to inform anyone that had not yet heard, about the cancellation. The festival promotes non-drug aspects of the marijuana plant, from foods made with hemp seeds to clothes made from hemp fiber. Those products come from a strain of the plant that has no THC, the ingredient that creates the high. Organizers are attempting to still hold the festival later this summer. Copyright © 2004, KOIN.
