Krauss-Maffei Kunststofftechnik has adapted its long fibre injection (LFI) process so that natural fibre reinforcements such as flax, hemp or sisal can processed into polyurethane mouldings. Natural fibre reinforced component polyurethane parts offer characteristics which are claimed to compare favourably with those of their glass-fibre counterparts.

State lawmakers consider allowing hemp farming
A bill meandering its way through the state House of Representatives seeks to change that, allowing licensed growers to raise crops low in the ingredient that makes marijuana a controlled drug. The bill HB 653 allows for supervision and testing to ensure that the crop falls below 1 percent tetrahydrocannabinol, commonly known as THC. You will not be surprised, I suspect, to learn that the bill has been in interim study for more than a year.

Woodchipping out of control
In 1995, massive opposition to export woodchipping poured onto the streets of major cities in Australia. At the time, at least 80% of Australians were opposed to woodchipping in old-growth forests. Plantations should be made sustainable (with a diversity of species, rather than exotic monocultures for instance) and natural habitats should be restored. Alternative fibres such as hemp and sugar-cane waste should be reintroduced, expanded or developed to replace wood pulp where possible.
