Hemp-legalization testimony is set

SALEM, Oregon — Advocates of legislation to make growing industrial hemp legal in Oregon will testify today at the Capitol.

Hemp and marijuana come from different varieties of the cannabis plant. Industrial hemp provides fiber for paper, textiles and building materials, as well as seeds for food and oils; it can’t produce a high.

Senate Bill 294 would permit production and possession of industrial hemp and trade in industrial-hemp commodities. It would authorize the Oregon Department of Agriculture to license and inspect hemp growers and handlers.

The legislation is sponsored by Sen. Floyd Prozanski, D-Eugene.

Living Tree Paper, a Eugene company that uses hemp in its products, as well as other hemp advocates are expected to testify before the Oregon Senate Environment and Land Use Committee.
