2nd industrial hemp bill passes House
Less than two months after Gov. George Ryan vetoed a proposed study of industrial hemp, supporters pushed a new version of the legislation through the Illinois House. The proposal, which advanced to the Senate on a 72-43 vote, was revised in hopes of addressing concerns that have kept the study from taking root. In vetoing the earlier bill, the governor expressed concern that supporting hemp might send a “mixed message” to youth because the crop is closely related to marijuana.

Aberdeen American News endorses hemp petition drive
A petition is currently circulating in the state to put the issue of whether growing industrial hemp should be legal onto the November 2002 ballot. Artwork worth $100 million lost in attacks
About $100 million worth of art was destroyed in the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center. The only major survivors are Alexander Calder’s 25-foot-tall steel sculpture Bent Propeller and Fritz Koenig’s bronze sculpture Sphere. Australian government may allow hemp to be used in food
The Australia New Zealand Food Authority (ANZFA) is considering a proposal to allow hemp to be used in foods such as tofu, health bars, biscuits and cakes. ANZFA is taking public submissions on the plan that would only allow industrial hemp - which contains negligible amounts of the hallucinogen THC - to be used in foods. Already its preliminary research has found industrial hemp is a safe food that is being used around the world.

Ban on hemp in foods draws protests
If they get the pre-lunch munchies, employees at the Drug Enforcement Agency in Concord could step outside their offices to snack on food provided curbside today by the New Hampshire Hemp Council. At 197 Loudon Road, passers-by can enjoy a hodgepodge of hemp products including pretzels, blue corn chips, nut butter and chocolate bars. The council’s gesture aims to counter the DEA’s recent introduction of federal rules outlawing hemp in food. Similar actions in 70 cities around the country are also happening today.

Board studying viability of hemp as crop
Another state-sponsored effort to look at industrial hemp as a cash crop has kicked off, but any chance of growing the plant in Kentucky is still a ways off. The Industrial Hemp Commission, a 17-member board created by the General Assembly earlier this year, met for the first time Monday.
