Industrial hemp advocates want to be growing trial crops in the Nelson region by October, and see no reason why it is not possible. This was the clear message given to Minister of Customs and Associate Minister of Economic Development Phillida Bunkle at a meeting in Motueka last night.

The Government should move quickly to remove any restrictions on growing hemp, ACT MP Owen Jennings said today. A meeting is to be held in Motueka tonight where the Associate Minister for Economic Development, Phillida Bunkle, is to discuss the issue of allowing trial cultivation of industrial hemp.
Industrial hemp “high-value” crop
Industrial hemp could be a useful crop for former Motueka Valley tobacco land now being used only as low- value pasture, a proponent of legalising the crop believes.

European countries allow hemp farming and companies make profits yet their climatic conditions are often not suitable for hemp farming. Our climate is great, so yields would be significantly higher, therefore harvesting/processing costs would be cheaper.
Another bid to plant hemp
Motueka horticulture scientist Peter Smale says he will reapply to plant a trial research crop of industrial hemp. His decision followed last week’s announcement by Customs Minister Phillida Bunkle approving a working party by the Customs Service to resolve differing opinions on the crop.
