Illinois Governor Rauner Signs Industrial Hemp Act

The Industrial Hemp Act of 2018 will allow farmers to become licensed to grow in 2019. Prior legislation, passed in 2014, allowed only four state universities to perform research. However, politics in the state delayed Administrative Rules from being enacted for two years after its passing. To date, there are two licensees in the state where Global Hemp was the first to legally plant hemp outdoors since World War II on May 22, 2018.

Global Hemp Heralds the Passage of Illinois Bill HB 5085

The growing of industrial hemp (“hemp”) in Illinois for research purposes will become legal on January 1, 2015 thanks to Governor Quinn’s signing of HB 5085 on August 26th, 2014. This marks the third time hemp legislation has been put before a governor in the state. The two prior attempts were made in 1999 and 2000, but both were vetoed by Governor Ryan.

Illinois Hemp Research Bill

Global Hemp President Eric Pollitt’s lobbying for an industrial hemp research bill has finally paid off as the Illinois Senate passed HB 5085 on Monday, May 19th, with all voting in favor of the bill. Two prior Industrial Hemp bills, one in 1999 and another in 2000, passed the House and Senate, yet were vetoed by Governor Ryan, who stated a lack of private funding for research led to his veto of the second bill. Mr. Pollitt worked with State Representative David Leitch (R-Peoria, IL) to create the bill, and HB 5085 acts as a research bill, one that will allow the industry to move forward.
